According to a report by the local Kenyan
branch of Transparency International the country is as corrupt as ever. This despite repeated affirmations from
President Mwai Kibaki that the fight against graft would be the cornerstone of
his administration. I have to say that I
admire the spirit of the Kenyan Civil Society; its dogged pursuit for
government accountability and the creating of a fair, decent institutions is
highly impressive.
Meantime, another report
published a ranking of the most corrupt institutions in Kenya of which
the police emerged as the first. Interestingly, the Kenyan Parliament figures as the thirteenth most
corrupt institution. What is the
difference between greed and corruption? Kenyan members of parliament – who earn about 140,000 US dollars a year, are among some of the best paid
politicians in the world. Recently, they
tried to give themselves an eighty thousand dollars pay off which led to much
outrage.
